Artist Statement

Boojie Cowell

I was initially inspired by the Constantine Ionides collection as a whole. My starting point was the large number of portraits of the Ionides family over several generations, which I narrowed down to one. I have reworked the painting of Agathonike Ionides as an imagined fragment of a larger textile piece that has since been lost or as an experimental sample for the same. The attached label bears the museum number CAI: 11XX to suggest that it is part of the collection. The base is distressed vintage silk with ragged edges as it is a fragment of a larger piece. The silk was embellished onto needlepunch felt by machine and the result was then painted with mica infused ink. The painting of Ionides was printed onto cotton and then enhanced with embroidery, beading and needlefelting, which I have left incomplete or trailing off, again to suggest that this is a fragment
