The costume department at the V&A is always inspiring. The mittens from 1790 looked both modern and useful and so I decided to make them in Nuno felt, which a felting technique using silk fabric and wool. Later when looking at the Thai lacquerwork I thought that the designs and colours would be practical for mittens and I remembered of a torn silk shirt that I had bought in Thailand many years ago. As I love to recycle old fabrics I thought that this silk would work perfectly and so I was inspired to make these mittens - a fusion between East and West and old and new.
