I saw Balenciaga's 1967 sequinned evening coat at the recent V&A exhibition. Beautifully textured, the colours ranged from white and silver through to hot pink. It was layered with beads, sequins and diamonds and ribbon.
My initial sketch of the coat's fabric reminded me of knit weave. As a machine knitter I love this technique as it enables me to experiment with texture and colour by laying different yarns and materials directly into my fabric as I knit it. I was able to use yarns from previous projects to experiment on the machine and I loved the layered texture of the weave that was created. I then included silver threads and satin ribbon hanger loops recycled from garments which aided the textured look I was after for my final piece. I added the opulence found in my inspiration source via beads and gemstones.
