The videos and x-ray photos in the museum revealing the interior structure and the construction method of the fabulous gowns in the exhibition were a revelation to me. I recently made my daughter's wedding dress and encountering many construction problems was fascinated to see how these gowns were created. Drawing on what I had learned I decided to take some of the tulle that I used to make my daughter's dress to make balloon-like shapes. These I pressed into soft ground on my etching plate. Rolling my "balloons" through the etching press caused yet more construction problems but by persevering I managed to create my "dress."
Taking my very young granddaughter to see the delightful children's exhibition at the museum we were both charmed by the gentle and timeless humour of the characters. This made me muse on an imaginary conversation between certain characters from that exhibition, critiquing the high fashion exhibit that had first inspired me.
